Although the controversy surrounding what some believe was a too harsh an assessment of the 2019 film Queen & Slim has blown over, the debate remains relevant. Moderated by Tanzina Vega, this episode of The Takeaway, a podcast hosted by WNYC Studios, explores how audiences and critics engage with Black artists and their cultural productions within the context of limited representation in mainstream spaces. Vega sat down with Queen & Slim writers, Angelica Jade Bastién and Clarkisha Kent, to discuss the backlash some Black critics faced for their assessment of the film.
