Updated: Sep 10, 2020

Taylor Renee Aldridge, Legacy Russell, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Taylor Brandon illustrated by Monica Ahanonu.

In 2020, museums are being taken to task for their inability to move beyond exclusive practices. They are are also being encouraged to disinvest from power structures that oppress marginalized communities. As calls to abolish museums gain traction, curator, writer, and activist, Kimberly Drew, speaks with artists, art professionals, and collectives, for a Vanity Fair feature. The piece asks: what can museums look like in the future, and how can they be better civil servants to the communities they serve?

“Right now I feel institutions with public audiences should be spaces of mobilization and organization for real and thorough change. There must be action in real time." - Tiona Nekkia McClodden
