Writing for the New York Times, Jessica Testa reports on Vanity Fair's latest cover featuring actress Viola Davis, photographed by Dario Calmese. Calmese is making waves, not only because of his stunning photos of Davis, but because he is the first Black photographer to shoot the cover of Vanity Fair. Testa explains the significance of Calmese's cover to the industry and the imagery that influenced the photographer's shoot.
"He wanted Ms. Davis to look incredible because, he said, she deserved to look incredible. But he also saw the assignment as an opportunity to subvert the magazine cover — a “banal industry standard,” he said — to imbue it with the same current that ran through his runway shows with Mr. Jean-Raymond."
