In ArtReview, Richard Hylton writes about American and African American art, and art institutions and African American art. Highlighting that social distancing serves as a useful metaphor for thinking about connections between art institutions and the lived experiences of Black people, Hylton emphasizes that museums and galleries must take action in addressing systemic racism, both within and without the institution.
"At a time riven with uncertainty, when coronavirus and protests against police brutality have challenged conceptions of normality, art institutions must also more fully consider the real implications of a ‘new normal’ in an era of Black Lives Matter."
