Smoke Signal: Building the Past, the Present, and the Afrofuture

Bitch Media staff-writer Mary Retta speculates that, when next steps seem uncertain, many Black artists are embracing Afrofuturism as a way of imagining (or reimagining) what the future holds. Pulling from the writing of Octavia Butler to the artistry of Janelle Monáe, Retta demonstrates that Afrofuturism's lens has made it a relevant genre for creators forging a way forward.

"Rather than reimagining our future, today’s Afrofuturist art blurs the lines between present and future, fact and fiction, and fantasy and reality, presenting a way for Black creatives to model collective resistance for anyone who has ever been deemed “other.”"
