New York-based artist, Simone Leigh, has come to prominence with her iconic sculptural works that fuse Black bodies with artistic forms and materials culled from African traditions. Her shining star blazes even brighter as she has now been awarded the honor of representing the United States in the 2022 Venice Biennale. This Artnews feature describes how the pavilion, which was commissioned by The Institute for Contemporary Art Boston, will include work in Leigh’s signature style. As part of this momentous occasion, Leigh is also working with Spelman College’s Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective in which scholars and intellectuals will work with the artists in preparation for the exhibition and contribute to a catalogue documenting this event.

“What we’re seeing right now is an unbelievable explosion in the presentation of work of African-American and diasporic intellectuals, creative, artists, writers, and thinkers. It is overdue, really exciting, and critically important, and Simone is part of this flourishing.” - Jill Medvedow, ICA Boston
