Photos Can Show Protests’ Complexity—or They Can Perpetuate Old Lies

In his article in the National Geographic, John Edwin Mason attests that images of protests play a significant role in shaping the narratives around Black people within the United States. Analyzing a photograph from the nationwide protests, Mason writes, "The problem with the photo is that it told a single story, as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie might put it..." Mason explains that these images of civil unrest can deliver powerful statements but can also be used to uphold dangerous stereotypes about Black people's lived experiences.
