Afritina Coker, Heavy is the Head, 2019.
The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural and Genealogy Center, based in Austin Texas, presents a virtual exhibition which focuses on three Black Texas-based photographers: Afritina Coker, Adraint Khadafhi Bereal, and Bria Lauren. Taking its name from these visual storytellers' names, Coker, Bereal, and Lauren explores Black vernacular photography and the power of capturing everyday Black people through the camera lens. Curated by Hakeem Adewumi, the exhibition links these three artists together, asking audiences: "What is this work asking of us? Why is this work important to our collective consciousness?" Wander through the exhibition online and explore!
