Carrie Mae Weems Made a COVID PSA

Celebrated artist Carrie Mae Weems is using her artistic practice, and her conscience, to create awareness of COVID-19 and its effects on people of color. Although billboards, sidewalk signage, and walls began appearing around Lincoln Center on October 15, Weems began this project back in April in Syracuse, NY where she resides. Beginning with radio spots, billboards, grocery-store flyers, pins and buttons, Weems’s efforts to raise awareness has now become a bilingual and national campaign called Resist COVID/Take 6! In this feature by Diana Budds for Curbed, Weems’ efforts to document the toll of this virus on Black and Latinx communities takes center stage.

“I thought, I’m not a policy-maker. I’m not a politician. I’m a citizen concerned about what’s going on in my community. This coronavirus isn’t going away anytime soon, and neither are the underlying issues affecting people of color that it has made even more apparent.” - Carrie Mae Weems
