Art Historian Darby English on Why the New Black Renaissance Might Represent a Step Backwards

In this interview for Artnet, Folasade Ologundudu spoke with art historian and professor Darby English. The two spoke about African American art and its use in times of social and political upheaval. English shared his ideas about the narrowness with which Black artists and their works have been received and critiqued, while also suggesting ways to counteract such limitations.

“To my very limited view, the last thing we can afford is to place obstructions in our own paths by promoting harebrained representation, valorizing art that says what everybody already knows, and publishing words that don’t say anything.” - Darby English
