Aliyyah Abdur-Rahman on Regard and Black Visual Representation

Brown University's 2019 conference, Political Concepts: Retouch, invited speakers to discuss how their research critically examines gender and racial violence, imperialism, and capitalism. During her talk, Dr. Aliyyah Abdur-Rahman delves into ideas of regard, Black visual representation, and aesthetic abstraction. Exploring the work of multimedia African American visual artist Alexandria Smith, Dr. Abdur-Rahman's talk demonstrates how abstraction eschews monolithic notions of Black identity, and visual Black representation itself does not amend social injustices.
