In an article for ArtNet, Yesomi Umolu, artistic director of the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial, contends that museums must confront their colonial origins and grapple with their legacy as historically exclusionary spaces, before moving forward with equity work. Umolu's words offer hope as she considers how museums can move forward as better advocates for their communities.
"Museums must practice empathy and close the gap between themselves and their communities; they must provide space for conversations on the issues that matter to the lives of their audiences, neighbors, and employees."
